Baby suddenly hates formula!

I supplement my breastfeeding with formula, because I don't produce enough to satisfy my hungry little one...
The formula I've been giving him is the "Gentle" generic brand stuff, the one that's the same as the Similac partially broken down proteins formula (which I started with). He was doing fine with it until yesterday. He only had one bottle, and a few sips of a second before bedtime (he normally has three) - today he had a few sips of one, and then outright refused to drink more. He had a complete meltdown over it.
He's just shy of 3 months old...
Any ideas? Should I consider a lactose free formula? Organic? Ween him off and hope my breast milk production improves to meet demand?

Re: Baby suddenly hates formula!

I think I'd consult with the ped especially after the other post about goats milk formula etc. Similac does make a brand specifically for supplementing.

Definately could consult La Leche League for the nursing assistance. Our local hospital also has lactation consultants at a cheaper rate then private. Don't know if it applies to you, but often read about people supplementing b/c they think they aren't producing enough...which actually makes them produce less since it is supply and demand.

They can weigh the baby before and after feedings to give you an idea of how much you are actually producing.

Good luck!

Re: Baby suddenly hates formula!

Well, I started supplementing in the beginning due to jaundice (at doctors recommendation).
Over the last week or so I've been decreasing his formula, and trying to get my milk up.
He's currently at 1 bottle, and bf on demand. I will be weighing him on Friday, and depending on where his weight is, I'll work on getting rid of that last bottle. I know he sleeps better if his last feeding before bed is breast milk, so I'm taking that as a sign.

Re: Baby suddenly hates formula!

If I were you I would just try bfing for a day without supplementation and see if he seems fussy at all. He's prob getting enough breast milk if you've been doing it on demand and he might not need formula anymore. I'm sure if he has the option of both he will choose breast milk since it tastes better, and your body will start making whatever he needs the more often he nurses. Do you have to be away for work and you don't have enough milk to leave?
