Does anyone feel (RE: Man-Made DHA)...

That if more people just breastfed their babies, we wouldn't need all this 'DHA enhanced' stuff?

I keep seeing the ad for the new Juicy Juice with DHA and how DHA helps with brain development and blah blah blah...

I want to scream 'just breastfeed your babies, that's all the GOOD DHA they need!'...

Am I weird?

I feel the same way. I don't watch TV and I only read Mothering Mag(when I have time, which is about never). I'm just irritated with America right now.

I actually like the "man made" DHA because it's made from seaweed. I'm a vegetarian, so I don't eat many foods that contain omega oils, like fish.
I do think it's crazy how it's become such a fad, however.
As a side note, I despise milk-but I tasted some Horizon Organic 2% with DHA added and it is absolutely delicious. It is thick and rich like whole milk, and has such a great flavor to it.

DHA is from seaweed but ARA is from Algae... Kinda gross (to me) that they would put algae in formula... like it's not gross enough.

I know I know. I agree. Of course there are those moms that just can't breastfeed, but on the whole I think a lot of people just don't want to make the effort. Personally I"m tired of people who ask, oh you're still bf'ing him? He's only 8 months old!!! It's like if you do bf, then it should only be for a few months or something...whatever. I mean the APA actually recommends bf'ing now for the first year of life but you don't hear that advertised.

Re: Does anyone feel (RE: Man-Made DHA)...

Well... to be honest... it does get to me to see mom's with low supply claim they 'can't breastfeed'... Hrm... I'm still breastfeeding.. I have low supply... I pump MAYBE 7 oz a day.... But I still nurse before every feeding (usually, but I may switch to nursing before naps so she gets into that habit for when she's older) and overnight. I nurse whenever she asks for it. True unable to breastfeed is pretty rare... It does happen where some mom's make NO milk... But usually the ones who say they can't BF made some milk, but not enough.

Off my soap box now, lol.

I am waiting for the 'are you still BFing questions' ... DD is 4 months old and yup, we still BF. I may not supply ALL of her nutrition but she's getting so much from me in those oz that she gets a day. Even if she only got an oz a day, I'd still nurse!

And of course you won't hear it advertised to BF for at least a year! Then the formula companies wouldn't make money! And I have my thoughts about the formula companies and the government and babies being less healthy if they aren't BF and how the $$ roll... But that's a whole 'nother vent, lol.

I think that they use that kind of stuff as a ploy to get people to buy the product - plus they can charge more if it has "extras". I think you are right though - if we all bf then we wouldn't need that stuff!

I've not looked into this much, but interestingly, Dr. Sears has a line of vitamins with DHA.

I guess I'm really fortunate that I have never gotten the "you're still nursing?" question. I expect I'll start getting it around a year old.
