Breastmilk causing face rash/eczema

Has anyone here had this experience? It appears my breastmilk is causing my DS to breakout on his face with an irritating, itching rash, possibly eczema. I now wipe his face with a clean corner of a burp cloth each time he pulls off and then entirely with a warm, wet washcloth when he's done. This sometimes seems to keep the rash at bay, but some days that doesn't even seem to matter.

Due to his reflux, I'm currently not eating dairy, wheat, soy or caffeine. This diet, with meds, keeps his reflux in check. But I must be still eating something that is causing this rash. Of the most allergenic foods, I'm still eating corn and chocolate. I'm starting to think it' the chocolate, so I ate it this morning and he's all broken out but I'm not going to again for several days to see if it improves.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance!

Re: Breastmilk causing face rash/eczema

My DD had two little rashy circles on her face, one on each cheek, starting when she was between 2 and 3 months old. I tried all kinds of topical treatments, but what really cleared them up for good was eliminating the allergen from my diet. She later outgrew the sensitivity.

When you've already eliminated so much, I can't imagine how difficult it will be to eliminate something else!! But my experience was that that made a difference.

My DS had a milk protein allergy that caused a horrible red, puffy, oozy rash on his face and eczema. I had to stop all dairy and switch to soy (which I wasn't fond of) and it helped dramatically. He ended up on soy formula when my milk dried up and continued to soy milk until he was about 2? He grew out of it and is fine now.

Does the chocolate you are eating contain milk? Unless you are buying a special kind of allergen free chocolate, most contain milk of some varying amount. My ds1 has a severe milk allergy so I know how hard it is to find chocolate without milk.

Re: Breastmilk causing face rash/eczema

Thank you, everyone, for your insights. I'm thinking that the chocolate might be the problem. We're about 36 hours without chocolate and it seems to be helping a bit. I've been reading labels when eating chocolate, and the source of chocolate was purposefully dairy free since I'm being very strict about dairy. I'm also continuing to be diligent about wiping his face after each feeding and changing the clothes so he's not in contact with any old milk.

I've been avoiding nuts, but not reading labels like someone would with a peanut allergy. I've also been avoiding tomatoes and onions in case those cause problems. We're seeing an allergy specialist tomorrow so hopefully she can provide some insight and let me know what foods I can reintroduce. This diet is a bit boring and frustrating when I'm hungry and need a snack.

Thanks, again!

What about eggs? my DD had horrible eczema and we found out that she has milk, egg, peanut and a majillion other allergies food and non food related. when I cut out the troublesome foods her eczema went away. Good luck it's not easy. I have been on an elimination diet since Sept. So going on 9 months. Sucks yes! but she is doing awesome! and we are still nursing at 15 months.

i'm dairy, egg, citrus and nut free here! Citrus was the last thing i cut out after a few colic and eczema flare-ups happened when i knew i was not eating any dairy, eggs or nuts. we've been great since then! DD is almost 5 mos old. I'll be curious what the allergist tells you.

Re: Breastmilk causing face rash/eczema

My dd had serious reflux along with eczema but never got tested as an infant, the doc told me to stop nursing and switch to formula to get rid of all allergens, we tried every kind of formula along with goats milk and nothing helped, she didn't stop the reflux till she was off of formula and still had the eczema till this last year, she is 8 now, when I took her to a food specialist that tested her for food sensitivites. She is not allergic to any foods, but is sensitive to gluten, dairy, cow and goat, peanuts, soy and sugar cane. Which explains why none of the formulas worked for her. If the allergist isn't able to help I would consider getting tested for sensitivites, which are different. but most insurances won't pay for the tests. Hope this helps, Good Luck.
