Birth Center?

I am pregnant with my second child. It is still very early and I am trying to decide what I want to do. Last time, I went to an OB/GYN and was not very pleased with my experience. I am interested in using a local birth center. My insurance considers this place in network and covers it the same as if it was a physician. My question is for those who have used birth centers and insurance. Did insurance really pay for the birth center the way they were supposed to?

YES! Mine did. The second time(diff ins) they did not cover 'use of the facility' so I started making payments on it. Turned out I had to go to the hossy then and the birth center gave me back my money.

Re: Birth Center?

I am going to a birth center this time around. We have Tricare and despite the fact they prefer you to go to a base military Dr, they have paid up without ANY problems!

I went to a base OB clinic and delivered at the hospital with DS 6 yrs ago, and i am SO glad i found out about the birth center this time around! I say if they pay, go for it!!!! Plus you can always call the birth center and tell them which insurance you have, and ask them if they've had problems with the insurance claims or if things tend to go smoothly.

Good Luck!

Re: Birth Center?

I'm not really much help- my insurance doesn't cover anything regardless because we have a ridiculously high deductible. But I am going to a birthing center with this baby and the insurace treats it the same as they would a hospital, and I like it a lot better. As long as you have checked ahead of time and make sure you or your husband's employer doesn't have issues with it (some employers will put it in the insurance somewhere) then you should be fine!

I agree w/ Import. Call the birthing center and tell them what ins you have. Ask what happens usually with your ins company and if they usually have problems getting them to pay. This will give you the best idea of what might happen.
