NE Ohio - Do you need AWD in winters there?

We are moving there is Sept and I am in the market for a new car. My dh says that everyone out there just drives fwd and that awd is not necessary but he has not been there in the winter. All I keep hearing is how much it snows out there so in my mind you need something that can make it through the snow. So, do you need awd or 4wd?

I'm from the N and AWD/4WD is absolutely not necessary in Minnesota. So, I fail to understand why it would be necessary in ohio.......unless you're going to live in a very remote location with practically no road maintenance, but then you'd require a plow on the front of your truck to get around.

It's much more difficult to get around in locations like Southern KS or Oklahoma after a decent snow because they don't have the equipment to appropriately keep roads clear or workers who have enough experience in doing it correctly.

4wd is definitely a big help in this part of ohio our road crews are not very good and we frequently have salt shortages so if you are already getting a new car I would definitely try for 4wd

I would definitely recommend AWD or 4WD, comes in handy like last winter when we had a ton of snow. There were days where my MIL's van wasnt even able to get out of her driveway. BUT, I live in a small town outside of Toledo.

Ground clearance would be a bigger factor to me than AWD/4WD. And remember, AWD doesn't help you stop any better, so don't drive like a maniac. I've lived many cold and snowy places in the continental US, and while AWD may be nice, it's never a necessity.

People aren't very good drivers in Ohio (no offense to the few that can)
There are also a lot of potholes that can't be fixed durng the winter, our famly gets around with a regular 4 door sedan but if given the option we would buy an SUV with 4wheel drive.
