Homemade torilla chips - really, really from scratch?

I've found recipes on how to make homemade tortilla chips using store bought corn tortillas, and I found recipes on make homemade corn tortillas. So has anyone made homemade tortilla chips from a dough. Can I make the corn tortilla dough and then fry it straight away? I'd appreciate all the help I can get!

I have only done it with store bought tortillas. You could make the dough and just try it out? and if it doesn't work, then cook the tortillas and then make the chips I kind of cook by trial and error. Good luck!

Thanks, that is what I was thinking too. It just seemed like a lot of steps. Maybe they'll be absolutely wonderful and totally worth it!

That's how we do it. I've only done it with flour tortillas...it would make more sense with corn tortillas.

My son-in-law just made homemade corn tortillas and when experimenting with how long to cook them in a deep fat fryer (to make hard shell tacos) some turned out just as crispy (and much tastier) as tortilla chips. I told him he could make a batch of those if the taco shells didn't turn out. He just made the tacos following the recipe on the masa (corn flour) bag then deep fat fried them. No prebaking/precooking involved. I'm sure you could bake them too in order to avoid all the extra oil.
