Re: making butter from raw milk . . . help!

YES!! I'm so excited! I gathered up all the advice I got and here is what I did: I picked up a new batch of milk on Monday, collected the cream off of the three gallons as we used them. So by the time I made the butter the cream was several days old. I let the cream come to room temperature. I had about a quart of cream and put it in a gallon jar. I shook it for about 20 to 25 minutes. I poured off the liquid and put the solids in a bowl. I smooshed the solids in very cold water until the water ran fairly clear. Then I smooshed in sea salt. Then I ate a fresh piece of home baked bread slathered with fresh butter!! Woo Hoo! It was so yummy I could have sat down and eaten the whole loaf of bread that way!

Thank you, mamas, for your help and encouragement. The butter is wonderful and worth every bit of hassle it took to learn how to do it!

Oh, I'm so glad! And now I'm craving some hot bread and fresh butter myself.

That sounds really yummy! I was going to suggest that perhaps you didn't get just cream off the top and the milk fat wasn't high enough - like how you can't whip half and half. Sounds like you've fixed it, htough!
