Homemade yogurt too runny?

How do you make your yogurt thicker?

I have been making my own yogurt in the crockpot and it tastes great. The consistancy is a little too runny for my tastes though. Ds loves it! It's a little thicker than a yogurt smoothie. I try to drain off the whey but it doesn't separate like the recipe says it shoud. It's all mixed together and it's all smooth and creamy but not the thickness like store yogurt.

Do I need cheesecloth?

i was told to make it thicker by adding 1/2 cup of powdered milk and by using a powdered yogurt starter. I have both here, but haven't tried it yet.

I make my milk with lactaid so I can't add powdered milk . First of all , you have to use whole milk otherwise it is soooo runny ! Sometimes I like using a cheese cloth (or coffee filter ) and I let the whey drain off . Then I end up with a yogurt , ... like greek yogurt . Its great !

I also wipe the lid of my crock pot a few times to get all the water off and that helps too. but powdered milk or gelatin would thicken it up

I use powdered milk or gelatin to help thicken. It also doesn't work as well with lower fat milks, we only use soy or whole milk, they both seem to work well.
