Re: "i want my birth the way i want it" vent!

Go visit a birthing center or midwife. Why not!? It's free and very interesting and informative. And, my cousin left her OB in her LAST week of pregnancy when she got a bad feeling about it and called a midwife and delivered her baby at home. So, they do take you last minute. Just transfer the paperwork and labs, she reads it over and voila, you're on the road to the delivery that you want. I visited a midwife late in my last pregnancy and decided to stay with my OB. I regret it now. I wish I would have had that baby in the birthing center. So, now with my third, I'm doing a home birth with a midwife. I enjoyed my visit with the last one and she gave me great information. I also learned about the activities they hosted at their birthing center and joined in on some of them like LaLecheLeague meetings, etc. It's cool, just go and gather information. They love sharing their passion of midwifery and birthing more naturally. They are usually there anyway during office hours so it's not a bother.

Awesome! Different midwives have different risk factors they are or are not comfortable with, and are or are not allowed to assist with. As far as I know, mine is fine with things like breech & twins at homebirths, and VBACs, and all sorts of things that are "high risk" at an OB. Good luck!!!

I don't know what they have in your area, but have you looked at a birth center? I chose a midwife who runs a birth center for all the reasons you described, and it might be safer for a mama who falls into the not-so-simple pregnancy category than being at home?

Also, even if the midwives you contact tell you that you need to be in the hospital, they may be able to attend your hospital birth. I have heard wonderful things from other mamas about their midwife advocating for them at the hospital, mediating between them and the hospital staff, etc. So you still may be able to avoid the things you are worried about even if you do need to be at the hospital.

Good luck!

Re: "i want my birth the way i want it" vent!

Just spoke to the first of the three midwives. She said she can't because I am a VBAC (even though it's not even the same uterus...) and actually recommended my doctor. It's such a shame HE won't do a homebirth, ha.

The Birth Center has no openings for October.

Just emailed the second midwife on the list.

And my hypnobirthing instructor is doing a birth with the last doula (she went last night to attend as a doula, so that may or may not be over... LOL) She told me she'd let me know what she thought of her.

Re: "i want my birth the way i want it" vent!

So, it sounds like a midwife is a "no-go". In Arizona, midwives are NOT allowed to attend homebirth VBACs. DH and I keep joking about just "not getting to the hospital in time" and having the baby unassisted at home - "Oops!"
DH is kinda uncomfortable with that though, because he's afraid something might go wrong; and we're about 15-25 minutes from the hospital.
I don't know what to do. Why does the law have to make this such a pain in the a**!

Re: "i want my birth the way i want it" vent!

Are you able to travel to another state to have your baby there? And our doctors allowed to attend homebirths?

What if you got a doula and your doctor was onboard with trying for a VBAC in the hospital? I think with a few people lobbying for you, you could make it work even in the hospital!
