where do I go for an evaluation?

I'd like to get my dd evaluated but I am not sure where to go. I suspect possibly aspergers , but not sure. She doesn't fit all of it. I DO think she has extreme social anxiety and gets "stuck" a lot on things she wants. She speaks fine and has good language but can't answer certain types of questions. There are a lot of little things to be honest and have for a long time. Definitely sensory issues. We had first steps EI come out and do an eval but they weren't too helpful. She did score low in social and cognitive (cognitive only because of not being able to answer who/what/where questions. They couldn't really do much to help her though. I am thinking of getting an independent evaluation, not through the school or anything. She isn't in school yet anyway. She's only 3.5. Is she too young for a diagnosis? I hate to wait too long if she could be getting help but I know that sometimes it's hard to separate what's 3.5 yo behavior and what's atypical.

I'd probably start with her pediatrician.

I was going to suggest EI then saw you already went through them. No other suggestions, but good luck.

You could start in a variety of places:

Look for a Speech Language Pathologist to do a language and pragmatic evaluation.

Look for an Occupational Therapist to do a sensory evaluation.

Look for an independent therapy center that has both professionals.

Look for a neuropsychologicist with pediatric experience to do a cognitive and behavioral workup.

If you really suspect Autism spectrum I'd look for someplace that does all 3 collaboratively. Our local teaching hospital has a Center for Developmental Disabilities with an Early Childhood Evaluation Program that performs a multidisciplinary evaluation.

Also once they turn 3 they switch from EL to preK, so your local school district should provide free multidisciplinary evaluations based on parent referrals.

Hope that helps!

We finally got her evaluated by an OT and they said she definitely has SPD. She is scheduled to be seen by a developmental pediatrician in January for further evaluation.
