Question officially hates crib mattress. now what.

I thought it was his crib he was protesting, since he would bang his head on the bars trying to sit up or roll. so we put the mattress on the floor. this worked because i could nurse laying down and sneak away. unfortunately he still wakes up after an hour at most.

in our bed he'll sleep a solid 2 to 3 hours. but he tries to crawl off it.

now what... do I get him a mattress?? i'm worried about sids (he's 8 months) but a firm non-pillow top should be ok? i think it might be that it's so small, or maybe the hardness, or that it crinkles??

Re: officially hates crib mattress. now what.

My little girl didn't like her mattress until I added a snugglewool pad to it. I think this muffled the mattress sound and also helped regulate her body temp (no sweating) plus it smelled nice from the wool wash. For my toddler I put her down right on the wool, she loved that, but the one I am using it with my 3 month old I have between the mattress and a cotton sheet, just so she doesn't get wool fluff in her mouth when she rolls. Good luck!

If you want something a little less expensive than the Snugglewool, I made DD's mattress pad out of a large piece of 100% wool felt from Joann. It's pricey stuff, but I used one of those handy 40% off coupons that come in the mail. I feel better having something breathable between her and the vinyl (or whatever) co-sleeper mattress, and it seems to circulate pretty well even when it's hot. I'll probably get another chunk when we move her to her crib... whenever she consents to that.
