ERF and not destroying the back of the seat

We are planning on RF'ing our 15 month old as long as possible. He is just learning to walk, and so I am envisioning dirty and wet shoes all over the car upholstery on the back of the seat. Do I just hang a towel or something over the seatback so that it doesn't become a dirty mess? How do you keep the LO from yanking it off or kicking it away if s/he is resisting getting in the car seat? Obviously, safety comes first, but it would be nice not to sacrifice the car upholstery if possible. Any tips from experienced ERF'ers would be appreciated. Thanks!

If the headrest in that seating position is removable, take it off, take a towel and punch holes in it to thread the posts of the head rest on. Then reinstall the headrest. There are also kick mats you can buy that are intended for FF kids that work just as well for RF kids. As long as the mat does not interfere with the installation of the seat, it's fine.

I just take my son's boots and shoes off (and I live in a messy Ontario winter) and leave them on the floor of the car - if it's really cold he has a blanket on a nd I got some slip on booties (Stonz) for him to wear in the car for the winter but for summer he is in his socks or bare feet in the car seat!!

I just take boots off most of the time. My old van was leather so I just wiped it off but my new one is fabric. The seats will need to be shampooed once I FF him though. They are a little bit dirty but not too bad.
