Anyone have a three-year-old in dance classes?

My daughter's b'day is in a couple of weeks and I am starting her in dance classes. What all does she need to start? I know a leotard, tights, tap and ballet shoes... anything I'm not thinking of?

Have you contacted her school to see exactly which colors of everything she needs? A lot of studios require black taps, pink tights, pink or black leotards, etc, but some require tan taps instead, kwim?

Do they have a preference for hair? If it has to be in a bun, it would be a good idea to go ahead and get the hair things (bobby pins, net, etc) now.

Will she be in any sort of recital/year-end performance? She might need a costume for that too and special color/new tights for that.

I hope she enjoys it!

to PP. At the school where DD attended last year (and the one she's at this year, for that matter) didn't have strict color regulations for their preschool class, though. As long as the kids were happy, the teachers were fine. GL!

My dds are now 5 and 6 but both started dance at age 3. They loved it plus it gave them some sort of structure to prepare them for preschool. I know with some of the fancier dance academies they require certain colors of tights. My girls' dance academy requires ballet pink tights (Danskin and capezio make them) , it didnt really matter what kind of ballet slippers or leotard as long as it didnt have a skirt on it cus it kind of distracts them, legwarmers or a dance shrug was fine and hair neatly pulled back into a bun. I do know its different with tap as one year I bought black and the next i went and spent 35 dollars on a pair of tan tap shoes. And ya cant go wrong with teletone taps. I think thats the industry standard.

My 3 year old is in dance class. They require certain colored tights and leotards for different classes. Right now dd is wearing pink. Her dance school has a starter package that comes with everything you need to start with and they discount it by 15%. But I've found that Payless has cheaper ballet and tap shoes and tights. This just reminded me that I still pay for dd's costume for her recital...$80!! Yikes..

Ya think thats bad? Try 50 per costume for 4 costumes (2 ballet and 2 gymnastics) and thats just the deposit LOL. Payless ballet shoes are pretty much the same as the capezio ones so save your money. Just make sure they are the kind with a leather insole and not the slipper fabric type.

Oh thanks... I'm glad you said payless for shoes. I had no idea they sold them!

I already talked to the school and they said they didn't have any requirements... they could come in jeans if they wanted to. I'm not going to do that... so I wanted to know from you girls what would be best.

So are dance tights different from tights they wear to church? Thanks!

Re: Anyone have a three-year-old in dance classes?

I agree with al lthe above I used to each 3-7 yr olds Ballet and tap it was sooo much fun .

and seriously as a PP said for the love of it get your child real ballet shoes and have her fitted , it is a lil more expensive but if you are serious about her dancing ( yea its all for fun but still ) she needs to learn positions in a ballet shoe , not a slipper that looks like them . A propper fitting is needed to size her elastics too and they need to be sewn in place , not safety pinned .

For a 3 yr old a nice after class treat is awesome too , keeps their attention span on knowing when mom gets here I'm going to be rewarded with a treat if I'm good . I hated giving my kids candy but thats what my instructor insisted apon . I personally dont believe food should ever be a reward or bonding tool JMO tho .
