Re: when does it become Extended breastfeeding

I think most people, when they think of breastfeeding, think of a "baby", i.e., someone under the age of 1, and that was my first thought when I saw the question. However, I am still nursing my 17 month old and I wouldn't consider what we do to be "extended".

I guess I'm not even sure what the term "extended" means as it is commonly used in this context. What exactly are you "extending" beyond? The "right" time to wean? You know? My daughter is still nursing because she is naturally decreasing her reliance on my milk and adding in more solids and she is not 100% to solids yet.

IMO the only way it could be labeled "extended" breastfeeding is if the child did not need the milk anymore for nutrition and was using it just for comfort. In that sense you would be "extending" past the nutritional need and going toward an emotional need. But even in that case I find the distinction to be pejorative, like another word for "weird" breastfeeding.

Interesting question.

Re: when does it become Extended breastfeeding

I always thought of it as 1 and a 1/2, as you get all those questions, "You're still BF" right around the 1st bday, then everyone lays off.

Then again, when my DD reaches into my shirts, says, "Mama want nanas" and pulls out the boob (like she did earlier today), I suppose we've hit EBF
