DS1 has low iron counts.

We had his 1 year checkup today, and the doctor was concerned about low iron counts. She gave me a list of foods that I should give him to up them, and he needs to be rechecked in 2 weeks.

He still breastfeeds a LOT and doesn't eat nearly enough solids. She said it's fine to still breastfeed, but that he needs to eat a more well balanced diet of solids.

Any suggestions for some good kid friendly, high iron types of foods?

Are you still taking your prenatals? If not you should and make sure you are taking them EVERY day.

here are some high iron foods:
Black beans
Raisins
PruneJuice
That's all I can think of right now...
Also squeeze a little lemon juice over iron rich foods and it will increase absorbtion.

Folic acid also helps iron absorbtion. How low was his iron?

Iron-rich foods:
- beans
- leafy greens
- blackstrap molasses
- soy products
- quinoa
- nuts & seeds
- dried fruits
- prune juice
- potatoes

Feed iron-rich food in conjunction with citrus fruits (foods high in vitamin C), and avoid servings with calcium-rich foods, especially dairy foods.

You can also get a liquid iron supplement like Floradix if necessary.

9.8, so not terribly low, but low enough for them to want to retest in 2 weeks.

I am not taking a prenatal, and according to both my dr and his, that wouldn't help because very little iron comes through in breast milk.

It wouldn't be the first time either doctor was wrong I'll definetly pick up some prenatals today. It's worth a shot!

Don't know if you are open to vitamins at this point or not, but kindervital by flora makes a great liquid multi for those little tykes, that has good iron count in it. I've been giving ds this since a little before one year and he LOVES it. He gets so excited and starts laughing every time he sees the bottle. Check it out at http://www.florahealth.com/flora/home/Canada/products/R4780.htm

It has to be a high quality prenatal or its somewhat worthless. Sadly not all prenatals are equal. If you get it from wholefoods then you should be good. OR another good health food store.
