I should be a pro...but I need your help!

Ok, this is the 3rd baby I've nursed, but I just don't remember everything! It's amazing how you just forget some things!

First off, let me start by saying that she doesn't have the biggest mouth, and I have HUGE breasts! So when she goes to latch, she opens as much as she can, but it just doesn't seem to be as much as her siblings use to do. So whenever she starts to nurse, I put as much in her mouth as I can, but she always ends up sucking for a moment and then latching on right. So now I'm stuck with super sore and now bleeding n*pples.

I was use to a little bleeding with my other two kids, but it seems like she's getting as much blood as she is milk on my right side. When she spits up a little from nursing on the right side, it's bright red from my blood. Should I quit nursing from that side and pump until it heals up? I've been using lansinoh lanolin on them, but that's it.

Any advice?

Oh mama, maybe try holding it in a kinda torpedo shape in her mouth until she gets latched on well. Does that make sense? That's what I think of when I would do it when my little guy was first born sorry for the funny imagery.

I personally would nipple shield it and let her keep nursing from that side. Trying changing her nursing position, she'd probably be willing to latch right in a different position than you have her.

I am almost 100% against nipple shields (no offense if you use one), but everyone I have known that has used one, the baby gets attached to it and won't nurse without it. I think I may try changing positions next time. I just hate the fact that she's drinking all that blood

Babies only get attached to them if you let them. I've used it with both Abram and Juliette and I only used it while my nipples healed. You said it's just your right? side, so you would still be nursing her on the opposite side without the shield KWIM? But it's totally up to you, I'm just saying what I would do.

What position are you nursing her in?

I might give it a try...
She's cradled in my arms when we nurse. I may try the football hold next

Re: I should be a pro...but I need your help!

I had this problem with my dd. What work for us was the football hold. You almost can't latch improperly with the football hold. It's much easier latching and keep a latch in this position.

I had one side that got really bad. I had to stop nursing on that side and pump to get it to heal. It just got too bad. I would say that if changing positions doesn't work maybe giving that nipple a break is a good idea.

Good luck!

I was very against using a nipple shield this time because it caused nothing but problems with my first. But, I also started bleeding a lot on one side this time so I gave in and used one for 2 days until I healed. We also switched to the football hold for a few days. She nursed just fine on the other side with out the shield and she had no problems getting rid of it when I healed. Of course that's just my

We tried the football hold a little while ago and it worked wonderfully. Hopefully I can heal up while still nursing her that way.
