Runners: Heart rate monitor or GPS watch?

I have a HRM, but honestly, I bought it for counting calories mainly. And I hate counting calories.

I do like to have it as a watch, but probably not worth keeping to use just for time.
I'm considering a GPS watch so I can track my time and distance without taking my phone off my arm.

Questions: Is it worth the cost? or should i stick to an app on my phone?

I have a Garmin that also has a hrm strap, although I don't really use the hrm strap. I found my Garmin to be worth every penny. If it crapped out today, I would buy another one tomorrow. I did use a phone app before and never found it to be very accurate.

Thanks. So without the chest strap it doesn't measure heart rate right?
Do you feel you need to watch your heart rate for training?

Correct. Without the strap all the other functions work, just not the hr part.

After some research, I do find monitoring your hr to be important and beneficial. I plan on starting heart rate based training once my marathon is over.
