Slow Leak of Amniotic Fluid - What to Expect?

Four days ago (at 34 weeks gestation), I noticed a little trickle of fluid out of nowhere. Did the testing and it was immediately positive for amniotic fluid. It's been four days and the leaking hasn't continued, so my midwife thinks it's a small tear.

I'm not really concerned or anything, just have a couple of questions.

1. Have any mothers had a slow or high leak that completely healed?
2. Does having a minor leak like this make it more likely I'll go into labor early?
3. If you're leaking "off and on" do you have to follow the protocols for PROM like no intimacy, nothing in the birth canal, etc. etc.

Re: Slow Leak of Amniotic Fluid - What to Expect?

I haven't had this. Both pregnancies my water has broke as a gushing flood at 41+2, so take what I say with a small grain of salt.

But. I would say definitely follow PROM protocols and keep the birth canal clean. If stuff is coming out, stuff can come in. Also, keep an eye on the fluid and make sure it stays clear - meconium in the fluid is often fine, but it can be dangerous and your midwife will want to know if it happens. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids - your body will continue making amniotic fluid to fill in, and it needs plenty of fluids to do so. I would guess you'll go into labor early. I don't have a good reason for that guess, but I've never heard of anyone leaking fluid for 6 weeks. That seems too long. I'm sure your midwife will keep a close eye on it, but the other thing to worry about is if your fluid gets too low. Good luck! I hope baby hangs in there a few more weeks for you!

Re: Slow Leak of Amniotic Fluid - What to Expect?

I had a slow/high leak with #1, and it did reseal. I was just a few days shy of my due date though, and having contractions anyway, so in the end they broke my water and I had him later that day.

I would suggest following PROM protocols just to be on the safe side. What did your midwife say about following them?
