NB sizing vs one-size?

Hi everyone! Sorry if this is a duplicate question (I'm sure it is, but I couldn't find it in previous threads).

I'm expecting my first in February and my husband and I have recently decided to try cloth diapering. I'd like some input on whether it's necessary to buy a whole NB stash, if I can just stick to one-size diapers, or if I should go with a combination? I understand it probably varies based on the size of the infant, but I'd like a rough idea of what I need before the baby arrives

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Re: NB sizing vs one-size?

good question, and if you and hubby are up for it, get a newborn stash fits 1-2 months up to 6-9 months, just depends on diaper size and baby size/weight. there is nothing like newborn fluff, it is a very special CDing time, with lots of cute fluffy bum pics lol

if you get strictly "newborn" and have a little baby born at 5/6#, you'll get at least two months use (weight gain approx doubling by one month, +1# give or take each week after). if baby is born at 8/9#, you'll get a month maybe. 24 newborn prefolds and 12+ covers could make up majority of stash, affordable. you can add some AIOs and fitteds for daddy, diaper bag. or just get 36 AIO or fitteds, enough to wash every 2-3 days.

if you get "size one" newborn (fits 6-16+), you could potentially get up to 9 months of use! for average weight babies. lots of brands with size one, google it pockets, AIO, covers usually.

my babies were 5, 6, and 8# at birth. the 5# got a lot of newborn diaper usage as he was average all the way, but the 9# not so much, he was done with size one diapers around 4/5 months. strictly newborn size lasted only 2-3 weeks max. even then, i was happy i had size one diapers, much more trim, most clothes actually fit, and it was velcro/aplix, which i was a super fan of. at 5/6 months though we went to snaps mostly, baby is sitting, enjoying his toe-sy's, etc and snaps just work better right now.

Re: NB sizing vs one-size?

My LO were 8.5 and 8lbs and we got the most use from day 1 until outgrown with the thristies DUO size 1 covers (AIO too but they don't fit quite as long). Capri newborn is also a larger newborn cover at least when I tried it.

My son (8.5lbs at birth) wore the thristies covers for about 2 months. He also did fit into OS pocket at about 2 weeks.

DD (8lbs) wore Thristies about 4 months. Both kids outgrew anything else newborn in less than a month. DD may have wore the RAR newborn covers a bit longer than a month, but not much -- they also have snap down rise to fit 4lb babies -- they were my in case of small baby covers. DD started them at the middle rise and did wear them for a bit still. I don't really know when DD would have fit into OS covers but I'd guess at least closer to 1month -- but of course they would have been bulkier.

I've done a poll in the passed and Thristies duo sz 1 covers fit most newborns 6lbs and up. They sometimes even fit 5lbers.

If you click "first diaper" in my signature you can see diaper pics of DD her first 2 weeks and the fit.

I'd say it depends on your reasons for cloth diapering mostly. For me it was important to start in cloth because our first reasons are health and environmental.

Re: NB sizing vs one-size?

I am loving the bummis super whisper size small on my baby. I do not like the one size for newborn as its hard to get a good fit around the legs. Newborn diaper only fit about two weeks but I am so happy to have the size smalls they fit wonderful and it makes for a trimer diaper without all that fold over snaped down in the front to make a OS fit.
