Prepping-with or without detergent?

I received some dipes I ordered today and they had instructions to prep, I assumed they would. The instructions just said wash 4 or 5 times on hot. My question, should I be using detergent each time? I am on my 3rd round, I did the first with detergent, the last two have been without. Is that ok? Is there a better way? I just couldn't justify using 4 or 5 rounds of detergent for on set of diapers...

Re: Prepping-with or without detergent?

With detergent. The purpose of prepping is to strip the natural oils out of the cloth. Hot water and detergent is the key.

You can prep in other clothes laundry, towels etc. If there is no PUL or plastic you can also boil and then wash only a couple times. I guess you boil without detergent... I'm sure they hot washes you did help, they may just not have helped as much as with detergent.

Also, alot of people don't really even bother prepping and just wash once with detergent and are aware that they might not be fully absorbent yet. Maybe wash one more time with detergent and call it good?

Re: Prepping-with or without detergent?

As PP stated.

Also, you can hand wash several times in a bucket with Ivory (less suds) or Dawn, either will do the job. Rinse them as well as possible by hand, and then send them through a wash with detergent followed by an extra rinse or two if needed to get rid of any remaining soap.
