Preventing thrush?

I am due in 4 weeks with #3 and when I was nursing DD2 we battled thrush which ultimately ended our nursing experience at 5 1/2 months. I would like to know if there is a way to prevent thrush from happening in the first place? We battled it for about two months and it got so bad DD stopped wanting to nurse and I had sore nipples, my milk supply started to diminish and I gave up. No treatment seemed to help get rid of the thrush.

I want to be prepared and try to prevent the same fate with our 3rd baby. I want her to benefit from nursing for at least the first year.

I would start taking a probiotic daily now. Udo's Choice brand are really good if you can find them, although any refrigerated probiotic will do. That really helped this time. I've dealt with thrush with both LO's. And if you feel thrush coming on after baby is born, try grapefruit seed extract capsules.

Re: Preventing thrush?

Oh wow, this thread has me concerned.... DD was just diagnosed with thrush (man, it's gross-looking). Is it inevitable that I'll get it? She's had it for about a week now; although it's getting better with the meds. Anyway, I haven't had any sign of it on me....

Re: Preventing thrush?

Me too!! You may not want to hear this, but what finally worked for me was a yeast reduction diet! If you want it, PM. But girl, this diet restricts you from EVERYTHING that has sugar! No fresh, dried, or frozen fruit. The only thing you can have the resembles a carb is brown rice. And I believe you can only have 1/2 cup of that per day. Anyway, I finally diagnosed myself after days and days on the internet and I got the diet from my MIL.

It worked, but by then my milk supply was on it's way out. But I made it with SEVERE pain all the way to 8 months! I mean, I cried and cried everyday. And the only one who even seemed to care was the lactation specialist. Anyway, for the next baby, I plan to get on this diet starting in the last week or my pregnancy (if the doctor approves) and only take it through 1 or 2 weeks of breastfeeding. I think my body has a naturally high yeast count and that the Nystatin and Diflucan, GSE, Gentain Violet, etc. that they gave me was never enough to overcome it.

Anyway, I could go on for days about how many OBGYNs I saw (8) and how many breast specialists I saw (2); and how many appointments and phone calls with a lactation specialist I had (6+).

Ok, let me know if you want to chat more about this. But know that I feel your pain, literally and figuratively!

God bless,
Edenn

One of the biggest mistakes that I made was that one of the times DS got it, I was not treated at the same time. YOU MUST BE GETTING TREATED AT THE SAME TIME IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU CHILD HAS IT. Trust me, this is a RULE. But sometimes your pediatrician is just thinking about the child and will forget to tell you. You may just be able to take something topical. You shouldn't need a pill. But call the doctor ASAP.

Good luck!

Re: Preventing thrush?

Thrush only needs to be treated if its bothering you.
Prevention: Grapefruit seed extract, probiotic capsules, lots of air time for your nipples between nursings (yeast loves dark, moist places).
Good luck. Ugh, I hate thrush Gentian violet did the trick for us but that stuff is messy. FYI - it wipes of just about anything with a baby wipe (which if you think about it is pretty scary ---whats in those wipes that can make them do that?)

Re: Preventing thrush?

DS and I battled it for 9 months before his body finally built up enough immunity to at least keep it at bay. I truly believe the main cause was my overall health (I went from one baby to the next with no break and lost a lot of weight with each the first half of my pregnancies, etc) AND the major factor was using the antibiotics for GBS while in labor with DS. I will NEVER do that again. It depletes all of the great natural antibodies you're supposed to be giving the baby in your colostrum! Would've been good to know BEFORE I did that, but I won't make the mistake again. There are many herbal and homeopathic remedies that totally work if you do test GBS positive, but that would be the biggest factor I'd recommend you NOT do to avoid thrush. I also have a personal issue with pacis b/c as soon as I let others talk me into using them for DS, the thrush showed up. I guess all his little mouth needed was an appropriate breeding ground. After finally tossing them a couple of months into our battle, that did help, but it was too late for us. Concentrated GSE, probiotics, and a homeopathic remedy for DS (we couldn't figure out the right one for me) finally "cured" us. Oh, and my kids suck on tags and/or silky/fleecy blankets instead of pacis, and those don't seem to cause the same issues. I wash and change them daily (they each have 7-10 they like!), so I'm not totally cruel about the sucking comfort issue, I just don't like pacifiers. GL

You can get them at a health-food or vitamin store.
