Fruit Flies - HELP

Early summer we bought several banana so they sat a few days and we got fruit flies. We finished the bananas and haven't bought any since. The fruit flies moved over the the small kitchen compost. It usually is emptied every 3-4 days to the outside compost.

So when we were away from the week I made sure it was all cleaned up. We got back and for about 2 week no fruit flies then they started slowly coming back. I've tried a second time for about a week, and again after a few weeks they came back to the compost. So I moved the compost to the garage just outside the door, next to the trash. So when food needs to go into it I carry it out to the garage. The compost has been there for a week, and the number of fruit flies has grown to hundreds and they are all in the trash and the compost!

Since it was right outside the door between the house and garage it was a swarm when I opened the door! Anyway I emptied the compost outside this morning and we moved the trash away from the door but now I fear we are going to never get rid of the fruit flies in the garage!! (NOTE The trash is a bit full, we have to bring it to the transfer station ourselves and my husband started a new job and we've been busy so its way fuller than it would be normally)

I've never had this much issues with fruit flies. Sure there has been a few around sometimes in the kitchen, but getting rid of the fresh fruit always ended it.

Has anyone been invaded by fruit flies and have any solution? I think inside maybe using a tupperware container and empty it every night outside. But what if we empty the outside trash and they never move out!!!

I think you will be ok once you get rid of their food source. Either take the compost out right away or put a tight lid on it. Move the trash outside for now or put a tight lid on that too.

Bleach the containers when empty to kill any eggs

Re: Fruit Flies - HELP

Thanks! Good point, The trash can hasn't been washed in a while, so I should do that too.

Re: Fruit Flies - HELP

I think cleaning out the can and doing the sealed container will help.

We had a some and they even got into a cabinet and I cleaned everything out and sealed it and they have not come back.
