Does anyone know why my cucumbers look like this? I was excited to start getting some but now it looks like they might not grow!

Re: Cucumber help!!!

A cucumber vine has male and female flowers. The female flowers are at the end of a small tiny baby cucumber. If they do not get pollinated, the baby cucumber turns yellow and dies.

This is also true for other squash and melons like watermelon and pumpkins

Looks like they are mushy from over watering. Try watering only once a week & give your garden a good flood.

Re: Cucumber help!!!

I think watering once a week would really have to do with the climate in the area. Idk where OP lives, but here Id need to water our cucumbers atleast every 3rd day, more likey every other day.

One great way to tell is to poke your finger into the dirt. If the top inch or so is dry, or too dry to stick together when pinched, then you need to water.

Cucumbers also lime to grow in dirt that is rich in organic matter. Our dirt is very sandy here, so I always mix in some rotted manure first -- also helps tge ground hold moisture for longer.

Cucumbers need water.

Those look like they didn't "mate".

Just like most fruits cucs need the help from pollination

Re: Cucumber help!!!

I watered every other night & that is what mine looked like. I stopped watering except 1 time a week & I ended up with more cucumbers than I could use. I was home canning & giving them away. Granted, I had multiple heirloom plants so I knew pollination was not an issue.

I had moved and my new area was a completely different climate. I saw she was an Army wife & thought perhaps she had not adapted her watering to her current area. If it is pollination... there is still plenty of time to plant more cucumbers. Last year everything in my garden died in a freak May snow storm. I replanted from seed & still had a great harvest.

Re: Cucumber help!!!

My kids LOVE cucumbers. Sorry I'm no help, I've never planted any, but hope to do so when we buy a house. I never knew about the the male/female flowers and the required pollination in order for cucumbera to grow. I'm so excited to learn along with my kiddos about growing our own fruits and veggies and raising hens! Love that I found this forum here.
