Exclamation Need help turning maxi dress INTO a maxi skirt

Im not even a sewing mama,
I just busted out my mil old singer and started by cutting the top off of the old navy dress I never wore. Then I had the ingenious idea of adding a sweatpants elastic top to it instead of adding a new piece of elastic.
It would have been great except that It had a zipper embedded on one side, which the tongue came off. And now when I put it n, the zipper undoes itself and can't get back together again. Should I just straight stitch it?
I have been trying to do that, but i think something is wrong with the thread I put on. Each time I start making a straight stitch, so much thread loops are on the underside of the stitch. I mean tons! Where am I going wrong?
Please help! Thanks!

Bobbin tension
bad or old or wrong needle
threaded wrong/ needs rethreading

Those are the top culprits for a birds-nesting problem.
