How soon do supply boosts work?

Just curious how quickly things like fenugreek supplements work or daily oatmeal? And has anyone had luck with oatmeal stout beers?

Daily oatmeal works for me within about 24-48 hours. The other supplements take about a week from what I hear but I haven't taken any of them myself.

Also, increasing caloric intake in general helps a ton for me. If my milk is low, it usually means I'm not eating enough food (healthy food) and not drinking enough water.

I thought about water, didn't even think about food, duh. Some days I don't have a huge appetite, I'll make sure I'm at least snacking on some veggies more! Thank you!

Ugh. I know! In the first few months of breastfeeding, I have no appetite. I have to just make myself eat enough. It doesn't take long to increase the milk supply though! After just a couple days of eating more (especially vegetables and fruits) I see an increase in milk supply. Hang in there and munch away!

Depends too why your supply is low. How old is your baby?

Re: How soon do supply boosts work?

He's 7 weeks.

And honestly, I don't really know that it's low. My breasts don't feel very full throughout the day (plenty full overnight) and he's eating every hour or so but I can't honestly tell every time if he's actually eating every time or just sucking. Sometimes I hear the swallowing but not usually.

I figure if I can stay ahead of the curve and make sure I'm keeping supply up that's good. But maybe I'm over thinking. We've not been to the pediatrician in a few weeks, go back one week from today.

If he is satisfied, and not overly fussy or acting hungry, he is getting plenty to eat. When you get used to the fullness, it seems to just go away. You won't always feel super full, especially after Baby is a few weeks old. If he is happy and sleeping after nursing, he is most likely getting plenty to eat.

kellymom.com is a good site. It helped me when I had questions in the early months and even now. It gets easier and easier the more you learn about each other.
Good job Mama!!!

You'll feel better after he gets weighed next week. I agree with what Chirpy said about not feeling full--you kind of expect it after the initial engorgement, but it doesn't stay that way.

Making sure you're eating enough, and well, and hydrated are always a good idea, but I wouldn't go with other methods without knowing your supply is low--if you end up with too high of a supply baby will be getting too much fore milk which can cause some tummy troubles as well as inadequate weight gain and won't stay full as long, plus you could increase your risk of plugged ducts and mastitis. For *MOST* women your body will naturally balance the supply and demand, especially with an exclusively breastfeeding baby, but some moms do end up with a true supply issue and it's great to know some easy solutions to keep in your back pocket.
