Good violin DVD curriculum?
We got DS1 a 1/2 size violin at our used book sale for $25
But, then, I looked into the prices of lessons which would run around $100/month! I know it would be worth it if he tries it and loves it, but I don't want to dish out $800-900 for the school year for him to just not like it, kwim? I figured we could start him out learning the basics from a DVD course or something and if it's something he would like to get serious about and continue in, then start the private lessons next year. So, does anyone know of a good violin DVD curriculum or any other alternative I'm not thinking of? I play piano, organ, and have played harp and trumpet although I have not played those 2 in a while, so I have the basic fundamentals of music down and wouldn't just be going into it blindly

Re: Good violin DVD curriculum?
I don't know of any... The proper position can be very difficult and awkward at first. If he were to begin playing with improper position, it could hinder him his whole life. Private lessons can be expensive, but you might see if there group Suzuki lessons available in your area.

Re: Good violin DVD curriculum?
I agree with the PP that it would probably be difficult to learn the proper posture/position without a private teacher, at least at first. I know that I definitely needed hands-on instruction -- the violin is not an easy instrument. Maybe you could find a violin teacher who would be willing to just do a month of lessons on a trial basis. You could also see if you could do lessons every other week instead of weekly to cut down on your costs if your budget is tight.

We tried a book and cd while waiting for a spot open and we gave up very quickly. It is almost impossible to learn without a teacher. I think it's worth the money. I would look a class and rent violins until it is something that you know will stick.

There are several people at my church who play... Are there any at yours that would be willing to teach for less? Or maybe a music student who plays? Just suggestions
