Do I need rhogam?

I had some bleeding today when I wiped. It was gone by the next bathroom visit, no clots, no cramping, still plenty of symptoms. But do I need to call and get the rhogam shot for that much?

Re: Do I need rhogam?

My docs have always indicated that it would be prudent to get it after ANY bleeding or spotting, so I'd say yes. I probably tend to be overcautious, but I would at least call.

Re: Do I need rhogam?

Called the dr office and her (med asst) only response about the rhogam was that they don't give it til 25-28wks. Ummmm...yes, that's standard, BUT. I also asked if I had any options for getting an u/s sooner and she said they can request it stat but it could still take 1-2 days. So she is going to talk to the doctor and call me back. I really feel like these people don't know what they're doing, but I don't have any other options right now!

Sounds like she really doesn't have any idea what she's talking about.

Hope they get you taken care of.

Re: Do I need rhogam?

If you really want a rhogam shot (or an ultrasound), go to the ER with bleeding. They will give it if they think you might be miscarrying.

But, the rhogam shot will only stop you from becoming sensitized if your blood and the baby's blood mix AND the baby is Rh positive. Generally they give it within 72 hours of birth and after a miscarriage.

I think you are safe until the placena as taken over that s when the chances of blod mixing ans sensitization occurs. But I say better safe than sorry.

Re: Do I need rhogam?

Personally I wouldn't get a shot with preservatives and stuff in early pregnancy. There isn't much chance of your blood mixing at this point, so I probably wouldn't. To me the shot would be more risky than the chance of sensitization.
