Why is my beautiful terry cloth so hard to sew?

Let me preface this by saying I am a total novice sewer... I hope someone can give me a suggestion.

To add to my "going-out" diapers, I'm making my own 2-layer contour diapers into which I'll stuff an insert, and over which will be worn a cover.

I have bamboo-cotton fleece, which is super easy to sew with a triple stretch stitch (which is exposed on the outside of the diaper, and the edges are not serged). However it is really hard to get a pin through, and too woven to be snappied.

So I want to make the rest with my bamboo-cotton terry, which can easily be pinned or snappied. But it's SO much harder to sew. My questions are:

DOES TERRY NEED TO BE SERGED? I don't have a serger, but my machine has an overlock stitch. However, it doesn't turn out well, as the edge gets all lettuce-frilled.

Do I need thinner thread, or a more delicate needle? I'm using the types for midweight fabrics, which the manual says is correct.

Any other tips for sewing terry?

ThankS!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think your tension is probably an issue. The needle easily gets caught on the loops. Try adjusting that and see if it helps. Plus, when I've worked with terry I've noticed the edges are not stable. They tend to fray and make a mess, so I guess unless I used a serger or had a lot of patience, I'd T&T. :P

Hi mama, heres a few tips. you don't need a serger but you will have to t&t.
make sure you use a needle designed for knits called a ballpoint needle.
Any thread will be ok. A good quality poly thread is fine. knits make a lettuce edge if the tension is too high. So you need the tension a bit looser. I have mine set between 1 and 2 and my stitch length at 4. Also pinning alot helps keep the fabric where you want it. make sure you don't pull or stretch the fabric while sewing. HTH
