Wool Yarn dyeing with Jacquard acid dyes

I just tried dyeing with acid dyes for the first time! I have dyed very small amounts of wool solid colors with Egg dyes and thought I'd try handpainting It's messy and not easy! That stuff gets everywhere!

Here's what I learned:
turquoise does not need as much dye powder - wow!

Turquiose needs to be done last instead of first - it will get everywhere!

I need bigger squirt bottles to do more than one skein of a color.

I need more towels handy. I should have put a large one under my saran wrap area and more on top of the saran wrap.

The one on top of the saran wrap helped tremendously with keeping color where I wanted it.

I'm figuring out the microwave cooking method and I don't know if I'm being successful. The dye does not seem to have set yet and it's had a shot of 4 minutes on 50% - 5 min rest - a 5 min shot on 50% power and another rest and now 5 minutes on 70% power. I'll rest again and do another 5 min on 70%.

Either I've used way too much dye liquid mix or It's just not setting.

Any tips on setting the dye?

ETA: What I did was after my last zap in the microwave I let the yarn sit for about 10 minutes. I placed a cup of vinegar and 2 cups of water in a big bowl and nuked it to get it hot (about 3 minutes). I placed my solid color in the vinegar bath and let it sit a minute or 2 then slowly added cooler water to see if it would turn clear and it did! I then rinsed it carefully so as to slowly even the temperature and now I have it waiting the handpainted skein in the washer for a quick spin out...

Isn't it fun? I just started as well, but I use the stovetop method as I'm paranoid about ruining my table or countertops.

Sorry no suggestions on setting it as it sets itself on the stovetop method. I'd love to see some pics!

you need to add the vinegar to your dyes when you handpaint.

oh and the yarn will only absorb a certain percent of dye to fiber.

and...while I do know it an be fun, it can also be unsafe, so I really hope your taking LOTS of safety precautions especially with the powder

Re: Wool Yarn dyeing with Jacquard acid dyes

I am using a mask and gloves (I'm a nurse and have easy access to them ) I used about 2-3 Tablespoons of vinegar per cup of water and I also soaked my yarn in warm water with vinegar and a shot of dish soap to make sure the lanolin was gone for about an hour before I worked up my nerve, lol!

My dye ended up taking just fine. spun it out in the washer and hung it to dry but i couldn't wait till it was all the way dry before I re-skeined it and photo'd it, lol!

Here's my first attempt:

Here it is re-skeined:

I'm kinda proud I have 2 handpainted and one solid so I'll have enough to do longies!

While I had a deep respect for all you Indie dyers out there before, I certainly do now! It is tough getting this exactly the way you envision! It's a lot of mess and clean up, too! Especially with the littles helping
