blackout shades--pls help me get started!

I have a lot of blackout fabric on the way as well as tension rods for all bedroom windows. I am really excited (hoping this will help with naps and early morning wake ups at least!!) but I don't know where to start. I have never done anything like this before. Should I have gotten a pattern? Initially, I thought I would just keep it simple, cut them to the right size (one panel for each window), fold over the fabric at the top and sew it so I can slide the rod through. Now I am thinking that I may want to be able to open/close them...maybe do two panels per window that can be pulled back? And I don't know what this fabric will be like, if the ends will need to be finished, etc. I would love some pointers. Thanks!!
