Homeschool Chat Summer Session

I have to report to my district. I'm making decisions about next year's curricula (way later than usual for me) and my eyes are sore from looking at the computer for half the day.

I did not like the way last year went so I'm trying to sort some things through.

One change is we are continuing through the summer with the youngest two. Limited subjects but that's a change.

How are all of you doing? How was the year?

Re: Homeschool Chat Summer Session

Our summer break lasted all of two weeks and now we have started summer school only because I was sick of hearing "I'm bored". Always Ice Cream for girls and Clever Dragons for boys is having a free summer this summer so we are trying it out. I never thought of using it as a curriculum but my kids are really enjoying it. Thayer is also doing Explode the Code online to help with his reading.

As for next year, we are doing unit studies with math and grammar on the side.

I think we did a trial of dragons a couple of years ago. I think he liked it.

I'm getting a book order too.

Re: Homeschool Chat Summer Session

I need to get books for reading ordered. My goal this summer is to put together all of my curriculum and things we need for each unit in boxes so we are set. I am creating our own workbooks this year and still can't figure out if I want to do that for grammar as well or just buy something.

Well, right now the younger two and I are in Michigan visiting family. ODD is at home because of work, and she is supposed to be doing her make-up world lit semester and geometry, but I have not checked in with her. The younger two are not really doing anything over the summer.

Re: Homeschool Chat Summer Session

Well what a timely thread. Ha!

I just placed my curriculum order for the year about 5 minutes ago.
I will need to add another reading book order and the second semester of math after Christmas. But it will be tiny compared to what I just ordered.

DH said he would put two long bookshelves on the wall in our schoolroom so I can move our personal collection up to the wall and use that bookcase for our massive load of school books.

I ordered Memoria Press for everything except math. I use Singapore math. I also did not order science. I love Apologia science but at this age, we just sprinkle science into our daily lives.

Re: Homeschool Chat Summer Session

We've decided to definitely homeschool. Yay.
Did you guys start an official curriculum of some sort for preschool stuff? Or just kindergarten? Oliver will be 4 in November & curious when I should seriously start looking into stuff for him.
I will start reading your threads here though to get some ideas going.

I am making curriculum decisions too. Anyone here ever use IEW for writing or Cover Story? I will have a high schooler in 2 years, and he is no where near where he needs to be with writing. Any reviews or suggestions welcome!

I have one that will be 4 in aug and I am not starting any thing until next year for kinder. They learn so much more through play and hands on activities than a curriculum. Now if you really want a curriculum I would look at before five in a row.

I'm adding more Memoria Press this year.

Two of mine took IEW with a homeschool mom who was kind enough to offer it as a class. They are strong writers. I was also considering it again for my eldest. It seems formulaic but it gives a good foundation to grow from inmho.

I did activites from tge website ABC Jesus for preschool and FIAR (Five in A Row.)
