Re: Can I use Dawn with HE FL? Any "natural" HE detergents?

Sorry for the double post. DS seems off today.

Thank you I will try gleaning from what you and the pp said. For my machine (Maytag Neptune) it will be this:

1. cold/cold quick wash on "wrinkle free" with nothing
2. hot/cold wash on "cotton sturdy" or "wrinkle free" with 1T detergent, selecting the water heater option and stain cycle buttons.
3. cold/cold double rinse or quick cycle...I'll have to experiment.

Thanks!

I have an LG Tromm Steamwash, I wash inserts, pockets, fitted, prefolds, and covers all together. This is my routine:

1. Speed wash on Cold/cold with no detergent.
2. Cotton/Normal wash, 1 tblsp. country save in the prewash dispenser, hot/cold, spin speed extra high, soil level extra high and prewash, stain cycle, extra rinse, water plus all selected.
3. Speed wash again with no detergent.
4. Hang pockets and covers to dry and dry the rest in the dryer.

I know it sounds like a lot but it still uses less water than a top loader and my diapers come out smelling like nothing (which is a good thing with diapers). I used to use vinegar but quit because it was making my diaper smell weird, not stinky, just weird.

Tide contains optical brighteners, and I assume Dawn does not. The brighteners make the clothes appear cleaner by adding a coating of chemical blueing agents to them. I understand that this "dye" is bad for the environment, and is known to stick irreversibly to our skin. Long term effects are unknown.

Tide also contains strong harsh enzymes which can cause problems. I would assume Dawn's enzyme version is less harsh, but i don't know, it may not be?

Tide is so strong that it hurts my lungs when I breathe it in when using it for a stain treater on clothes in a bucket of hot water, for example. (I have some in the house and keep trying to use it, but always end up not wanting to.)

So overall, if using regular Dawn, you are skipping the enzymes (enzymes can cause skin rashes for some sensative babies because they eat away at organic matter...like their skin, lol,) and with Dawn you don't have brighteners I presume? BTW, regular "blue" Dawn just contains surfactants, but the other Dawn Ultra or extra or something has surfactants and enzymes listed on the bottle. I looked last night.) Both are composed of petrochemicals I think, but one is harsher than the other. But for us Dawn is not going to work. Bummer. Too sudsy for a FL I guess.

Hope that helps some to answer your questions.

I use Allen's liquid in my FL. Cold rinse, hot wash, extra rinse.

I also think Country Save is the best option for FL. I think we've tried it all and settled on that. Allen's didn't eliminate the poopy diaper smell, Tide HE leaves WELTS on my poor little guy, Sportwash is okay but I don't like the scent, Dawn = stink and never ending suds, vinegar = stink. I had been using 1/2 scoop powder and I was having some leaks so just stripped - I think I was using too much.
Good luck!

Okay, I thought I was just hallucinating...my dipes have this funny vinegar smell, and I do use the baking soda.

sigh.

I guess I'll stop using it and see if my dipes smell like nothing again. I'll use the vinegar for dying? Dunno...bought a jumbo pack at Costco.

Oh, I haven't used Dawn in my FL, although I may give it a whirl if this funny smell doesn't go away. I've been stripping my hand.

Dawn didn't work for us (Maytag Neptune). I use Planet and have been using it for about 2 months now and so far I really like it! I do a cold rinse first, then wash on hot/cold with presoak/heavy soil/max extract/extra rinse.

Another one you could try that is really great is Mountain Green. You can find it at Sprouts or Whole foods.
