cosleeping fans and travel

We cosleep w my 5 mo dd and love it. At home we use a king size bed on the floor and for naps she mostly naps on us or near us (yeah we probably need to work on this). So she's never really slept alone.

Next month we will be traveling and seeing relatives. Should we work on weaning her to her own mattress on the floor or is there some solution for cosleeping with a rolly 5 mo old and a normal height bed?

Thanks!

We've always co-slept and never had an issue with normal height beds, or travel. In a bed with no rail DS always slept in the middle.

Why can't you put that mattress on the floor? When we travelled with our then 3 mos old and stayed in a hotel, I just surround her in the king size bed with towel rolls under the fitted sheet so she could not roll anywhere. One on each side, under fitted sheet, and she was contained. When we go to MIL's, that bed only a full and too small for towel rolls so I put the mattress on the floor and we sleep there.

eta: Dd always sleeps/slept with just me.

I thinks it's easier to co-sleep during travel (as opposed to a baby used to a crib). When we had awful weather and were without power last Feb, we stayed with my grandfather. We slept in a king size bed with DD between us, no issues. Just like home.

And right now we are in a king with 11 mo DS. He sleeps between us most nights.

We didn't co-sleep most of the time at home, but always did while traveling. We alway had DD sleep between us or used extra pillows to contain her. At 5 mo. she shouldn't be too hard to contain on a regular height bed, now that our DD is 2, she has fallen out of the bed if DH and I are not on either side of her (pillows don't cut it anymore!).

In another co-sleeping thread, someone was recommending this: http://www.gobedbug.com/GOPAGES/infantcosleep.htm

I have to say it looks really cool, and I'm tempted to order one for travel, since it would take up a heck of a lot less room than the pack'n'play . . .

I co-slept with both of my boys and that didn't change when we traveled. When we traveled with both kids and wound up in rooms (or at relatives) where there were only double beds we would split up. Dh would take ds1 in one bed and I would take ds2 in another. Ds2 was still nursing so it was easier that way. Ds2 never rolled out of a bed. I really think traveling with a co-sleeping baby is easier. All they need to feel safe and sleep is a parent beside them. There is a familiarity that allows them to sleep almost anywhere.
