PUL or elastic allergy? Newer Flips?

Soooo.....my all time favorite diaper system was Flips & flats/prefolds, until DD started having issues out of no where at around a year and a half. I know the diapers were clean, then I thought I had it pinpointed to a PUL allergy. Every time I put her in a Flip, sheíd get a rash.

Weíve moved on to Mother Ease Toddlease and XL airflow covers. I *think* the covers work, because I have them on so loose that it just kind of hangs on. Lol! I bought some colored large Sandyís on here that ended up having major balding. She ended up red, Iím guessing because of the PUL mesh. Other good condition larges work fine though, as do the toddlease I bought new.

So, itís been a while. We ran out of clean XL airflow covers and tried a Flip (Mary & Armstrong) with no issues! I thought it was a phase during a hard winter and her immune system down or something. I was so stoked! But no. I put the red Little House on the Prairie Flip on her and she ended up with angry welts where the elastic touches her legs! Gah!

Disposables are out. They are ok here and there, but if we use them too much she has rashes too.

This got me thinking if it is the newer Flip elastics or the PUL. Iím so stumped because the airflow covers work though.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you have any older Flips to try?

I do. Maybe Iíll let her clear up and give it a try.

It got me thinking if itís when the elastic gets wet though. I usually try to change her ASAP, but that doesnít always happen. I canít remember if that last change was a little wetter than the others.

Re: PUL or elastic allergy? Newer Flips?

Hmmm. DS was wearing flips at night for a while and also started having angry red marks where the elastics were in the morning. We switched to wool, but I thought it had to do with his age. It was about like you said - 16-18 mos or so and I just figured he was moving around a lot more or had stronger pee or...something to do with the age? Is that possible? I haven't had him in PUL since to test it, although we have a couple trainers that have PUL but I don't think the elastics are covered in it.

Thatís strange that youíve experienced this too!

My now 7 and 4 1/2 year olds have been in Flips with out any issues that I remember.

I was hunting old threads and came across latex allergies. Someone had mentioned Shea butter being similar. This got me wondering about the Grovia diaper stick. We had one stick that worked wonders, then got a new one that seemed to make things worse or no better. It smelled more fragrant, so I thought maybe the ingredients changed. I canít find the stick to see if it has Shea butter though! Iíll look online. I sure hope itís not the start of a latex allergy, that one looks scary.

Now Iím back to wondering about the elastics!

Bit the bullet and ordered 3 more XL airflow covers. When I bought the toddle ease, they had a sale of buy 5 Sandyís and get a free cover. I thought they wouldnít have worked because of the PUL. But they do. Iíll just have to deal with the bubble butt. Lol! Probably dresses will solve the clothing problem.
