I am so frustrated!

My five year old was recently diagnosed with Asperger's.
And now, instead of having "a difficult child", I have a child that gets away with murder because "his brain works differently".



I know it is terrible for me to think that way, but that's really how it is around here.
This child has no clue of right and wrong. And there are no effective forms of discipline.

My grandmother has a son with the mind of a two - three year old. My Uncle used to get away with murder with her, until I started watching him for her. My Uncle has the body of a 36 year old man, but my grandmother did everything for him. It was through watching him that I found out he could do many things for himself while my grandmother was not around such, as pick out his food, feed himself, go to the bathroom by himself and so on. I know its not the same but there may be other techniques you could use to help him.

Do you have a behavior specialist who can come to your home and help? And remember, a diagnosis is an explanation, not an excuse

Aspergers is HIGH functioning autism your son can learn to do what you need him to do!!! He may need to learn in a different way but it is possible! My son is pdd-nos - also a mild form of autism and although it takes him longer and things are harder he is doing GREAT. If you aren't already you NEED a behavioural therapist in your lives TODAY! It will make a difference really!

We do NOT ever allow our son to use having special needs as an excuse for anything. He fully understands that he has special needs, he gets that things are harder or different for him but we NEVER let him use that as an out. He is 8 now and plans his own therapy goals with his team! It took us a long time to get to this point but after a LOT of talking to our son about his negative behaviours he was able to decide what is the hardest for him and what he wants to work on. He LOVES having autism Seriously he just said "Autism is AWSOME" a couple weeks ago after coming home for SN's camp. Diagnosis is just the first step mama and you are on a long journey BUT the road is paved for you and us by people who have BTDT. There is SO MUCH help out there for our kids now-a-days that your son (and mine) have such good chances to do GREAT things in their lives! Please try not to see his diagnosis as a negative thing or a reason to expect less of him - his diagnosis is a tool, a tool to help him and you understand who he is and how to help him.

My daughter was diagnosed at 7 years old and she's the same kid she was the day before the diagnosis, and we still punish her for things she's doing today, just like we were 15 months ago. I don't let her get away with anything just because she has autism. sorry kid. lol Now, the Anxiety gets her out of some stuff, but not the Autism. lol

I agree. I have one child with ADHD and one child who is on the autism spectrum and has a genetic disorder. Neither child can "get away with murder." Both children are responsible for their actions - while they may not act the same as their peers they are still capable of understanding cause & effect.
