Not Biting But Teeth... Rubbing?

My almost-twelve-month-old has five teeth - three on the top and two on the bottom. When he nurses, it hurts! I always end up with two red marks from his top teeth. He isn't biting - I can't even feel his bottom teeth. Or is that what biting is, since the tongue is in the way? It seems more like he's just sucking so hard that I'm rubbing against his top teeth as he sucks and swallows. There have been a few instances that the sore spots have even bled a little, particularly if I nurse more than usual. I'm about ready to be done... any suggestions?

Re: Not Biting But Teeth... Rubbing?

Are these teeth new? I know the adjustment to new teeth was always uncomfortable for me for about 2 weeks, even though babe was behaving.

Otherwise my best guess is that your kiddo's latch isn't deep enough, babe needs a bigger mouthful of breast to get good compression with their palette instead of trying to treat you like a straw. I know when you already hurt, letting them get a bigger mouthful of you seems counter intuitive, but that's the way it works.

Hmmm... that is a VERY good point. The teeth marks are right behind the nipple, so it would seem like he has a very shallow latch. He used to do much better, and I guess I just got lazy and don't watch carefully anymore. I think I'll go back to helping him latch properly and see if that helps. Wish I had thought of trying that a couple weeks ago... if it works, I'm going to kick myself for the month or so of unnecessary pain I've been dealing with.

My original plan was to breastfeed until his first birthday. That'll be June 2, and now I'm finding that maybe I'm not ready to give it up. I think weaning might be easier on him than me! So if I can find a solution to this problem, I might just keep on for a little bit until I'm better prepared to give it up.
