Infant prefolds for newborn?

I was wondering if infant prefolds would be too big for a newborn that weighed around 7 pounds? Could I use infant prefolds with newborn fleece covers (the covers are supposed to fit from 6-11 pounds)?

Re: Infant prefolds for newborn?

I have a newborn who weighs in right now (5 days) at 8 lbs. She had dropped to 7.5 in the hospital. What I found was that while the infant PFs fit her, I have to fold down a couple inches in front. Then snappi-ing it made it really tight across her belly, which I don't like. I went ahead and got a dozen preemie PFs to use for this little while. They're in the dryer now. Couple more washes and they'll be ready to go.

Unfortunately I also found that most of the other things I had also didn't fit (too big). I wound up getting a couple extra NB BSWW and I use a pair of NB wool soakers someone made us. I'm going to try some of my small fleece covers and the small BP I have on her soon, just to see how they fit.

Good luck!

Re: Infant prefolds for newborn?

I started using infant prefolds with Clark when he was about 8 pounds. I did the newspaper fold... now they fit better at 11 pounds, but they worked just fine and did the trick! Hmm I asked, at the time, how I should fold them for a newborn and some nice mamas gave me some hints. I'll do a search for that thread...

Re: Infant prefolds for newborn?

My son was never that size (in the outside world at least ), born at 8lbs 12oz and only lost an ounce before gaining more than an ounce a day for several months after...

But on him they fit great. A little bulky, but nothing we couldn't handle. I don't know how they would be on a littler baby with a cord stump still, even as big as he was (and long) I had to really make sure it was folded down during those first 10 days.

Good luck deciding

I've never used preemie prefolds.
I've cded three newborns...all were 8 lbs. or 9 lbs. when born.
I bet my first dropped down to close to 7lbs. and they worked fine.
They might be a little bulky at first and yes you have to fold the end down but it's never bothered me (or baby that I know). HAHA
