Any help with cutting down Prefolds?

I have 2 doz toddler PF, my toddler is now potty-trained and they are really too big for my 21 mth old. There is only 1 doz that is really used, the others have been washed and only used 2-3 times.

I tried cutting one down to more like a fitted dip without the elastic using a prowrap cover for a pattern but my sewing maching doesn't want to sew through the thick part! I have a brand new machine that DH bought me, it is an expensive one that emborderies and all, I don't want to mess it up if the fabric is too thick.

I just hate having all of her diapers too big and really don't feel like buying a bunch of new ones, but I might have too.

Any help?
