We planned to do it, but somehow never got around to it. DD's head was asynclitic. It was pretty rough, but I only tore a tiny bit and didn't need stitches.

I'm having DH do it for me. It also encourages us to DTD more regularly

I think it *should* help for the same reason that people can enjoy "rear entry" or get giant disks in their earlobes. Skin does stretch with repeated, increasing pressure, and only tears/scars when too much pressure is brought to bear at one time. Slowly increasing massage pressure should let the area accept even further pressure more easily.

i've never done it and haven't torn with any of mine even my 3 boys at 10+ lbs but hey it doesn't hurt i def. wouldn't have anyone else but the hubs do it
