Have you dealt with this?

About a week ago I noticed DD's long, thick curly hair was starting to fall out and thin BIG TIME. I kept an eye on it and last saturday when we were putting her to bed, the layer of hair on top flipped over to the other side of her head and all of the hair underneath was gone. She pretty much only has the hair on the top of her head left. Our family doc is booked until next month so I got in to see the nurse practitioner, she noticed it instantly. There are a lot of patches on DD's head that are nothing but scalp. The NP didn't say a whole lot, she just sent us for a bunch of bloodwork.....

Anyone ideas on what could be causing it?

I'm having a hard time dealing with it..... I was doing good until the ride home earlier, I broke down. I just want her to be ok

no experience or advice, just feel for you & your DD. Hopefully getting the bloodwork so early will help!

Good luck! I have a friend who's daughter had that happen about that age. It ended up to be Alopecia. They thought at first that she was pulling it out (mom and dad were going through a VERY messy divorce and kiddo was caught in the middle), but she was finally diagnosed about age 4. She has a great attitude about it now at age 6, mostly because her mom has raised her to embrace who she is, and not try to cover it with a wig. Last summer, she shaved her head (her choice) and hasn't looked back.

It could also be a thyroid issue.

Good luck! I hope you get quick answers!

Re: Have you dealt with this?

Is she on any medication? I once got on a medication that made me lose a lot of my hair (it grew back). Or, my thought is the previous posters.

Re: Have you dealt with this?

My sister had this happen a few months after she was very sick with a high fever, and hardly ate/drank anything while she was sick. It was nutrition/dehydration related for her.

Re: Have you dealt with this?

All of her bloodwork was normal.... so they referred us to a dermatologist in Kansas City. I work in the ER and talked to the doctor on call, she instantly thought alopecia areata and gave me a bunch of books to read. That is definitely what it sounds like.

This is terrible but... I don't want her to lose her hair

Of course you don't want your lo to lose her hair.I hope it isn't that. If it is you will find a way to ensure that she is ok. Let us know.
