Baby won't eat solids

We are enrolled in WIC and my daughter's iron came out low. She is 10 months. She nurses very well. She just plays with solid foods, and only eats a few bites here and there. The WIC lady seemed very concerned and was referring us to programs to help developmentally delayed children. I personally feel that she just prefers nursing over eating. What she does it she eats okay. Anyone else dealt with something similar?

Ap of my kids didn't really eat a whole lot until they were at least one and they are fine. While WIC is a great program, they are not doctors and they seem to forget that sometimes.

Re: Baby won't eat solids

We didn't even start solids until 9 months (to support my milk supply while working/pumping), and certainly kids didn't do anything more than mouth at foods until after 1. I don't know anything about iron levels, but as far as food consumption timelines go it looks normal to me so far.

I'm on WIC too. I feel like they don't get a lot of breastfeeding mothers. They seem to have a lot of support available though. Being a government run program I think they really want to provide you with resources. My baby is nine mos now and eating pretty good, but he won't let me feed him. Tomorrow, I know they're going to try to get me to buy the baby food, even though we do baby led weaning, and he won't eat it. It's like they don't want me to turn down the help.

I would as a breastfeeding mom take an iron supplement. I would go to the appt they are referring you to... Your child might not be delayed. They will evaluate her & see if it's a motor skill issue or not. I would not panic. They are probably following procedure.

Food is purely fun up until 2yrs. I wouldn't be too concerned until hitting the 1.5yr mark. Breastmilk is still the main source and solids are supplements. Is you're pediatrician concerned?

I wouldn't be too concerned except that if she's not "eating" she should have full access to breastmilk around the clock which does mean in the middle of the night. There's a book called My Child Won't Eat.

Here's the link on Amazon. Maybe your local library has it to borrow

Re: Baby won't eat solids

If her iron is low you could try taking an iron suppliment. I've recently heard the saying "food before one is just for fun" it makes a lot of sense. She's practicing eating and the breastmulk is giving her all the nutrients she needs. Ultimately you should go with your gut feeling, but I don't remember my older two being experts at eating at that age, and they are happy and healthy.
