Re: Trisomy 18.... Now what?!?

There is a BIG difference between partial Trisomy 18, mosaic Trisomy 18 and full trisomy 18. The differences are noted on amnio so she should know which trisomy 18 her baby has. Babies with any trisomy 18 will have issues and may have a shortened life expectancy but babies with full trisomy 18 can not survive.

Re: Trisomy 18.... Now what?!?

A friend of mine had a baby with t18. She lived for several months. Yes, it often is a fatal condition (I didn't know the differences between the types until I read the pp before me). It is heartbreaking to know your child will die, but a lot of families still gain a lot of joy from their little ones. I know it isn't the same thing, but my DD's life expectancy is not long...early adolescence at best. I'm just trying to enjoy her while I have her. Even babies with severe limitations can be so sweet and bring you so much joy. I urge you to help her enjoy this baby as much as she can.

I know of a little boy who died this summer, who lived to be 6.5 with Trisomy 18. I am on another board with his sister, from the way she talks about him, he brought so much joy to everyone who knew him.

This happened to me last year. My friend was about 8 weeks further along than me (her due date is/was this week ) I felt so much guilt about being pregnant when she found out about t18 and then lost him a few weeks later. But, I was talking to my brother about all this (more than I did w/ DH), he mentioned that being pregnant too made me extra sensitive to her situation and not to avoid her to spare her pain. It wasn't going to happen, anyway, so just to keep being her friend in spite of my uneventful (so far) pregnancy. They are trying again for another baby, they were also infertility patients when getting pg with the first.

Hope that makes sense. So sorry to hear about her situation.
