Vasectomy side effects?

My husband and I agreed not to have any more children. What we can't agree on is birth control. I refuse to take hormones and I really don't want anything implanted. He refuses to wear condoms and is terrified of a vasectomy. We did some reading and heard of a decent percentage of men complaining of long-term pain or other sensations after a vasectomy. Anyone have any stories to share, positive or negative, or even any kind of birth control that you like?

Vasectomy--he has pain after DTD every single time, and missed almost a month of work after the procedure due to orchitis and extreme pain

What about a diaphragm or Instead Cup? Your DH won't feel it, there are no hormones, no procedures.

Re: Vasectomy side effects?

That is terrible! I felt like the side effects were downplayed, or maybe not understood, by my OBGYN. I'm on the fence about the diaphragm because of having to use some kind of gel or spermicide with it. I didn't know I could use a cup.

I just remembered something I should have mentioned in the OP. My friend told me about a procedure where your OB lasers your uterine wall to thin it out and prevent periods. Anyone done/heard of it?

What you are referring to is called ablation and is for the treatment of endometriosis and severe periods with heavy bleeding, clotting, etc. Doctors here won't do it unless you and your spouse will be using birth control as it is dangerous to become pregnant.

Bumping this thread for more input. We are considering this but are worried about potential downsides.

Re: Vasectomy side effects?

Vasectomy has the lowest risk of anything currently available. Side effects are very few and far between and have been vastly studied as the procedure has been around for like 100 years. There's risk with everything and of course you will hear a few horror stories but that is not the norm. Like seriously, everyone knows several men who have had it done. SO common, fast, and with a short recovery.
All of my friends husbands have had it done, my brothers, my dad, I know of 3 of my neighbors, DH has discussed it with several coworkers who've had it done.... none of them had 'horror' stories or long lasting issues from it. It's a generally low risk procedure.

Re: Vasectomy side effects?

DH had one over 3 years ago and we know quite a few people in our families and among our friends who have had them. I'm not sure if they would admit they've had side effects if they have. My DH has been very happy he got one.

There are risks to everything of course. You've got to weigh that for your own life. I could not have any more children due to my health. We discussed sterilization for months after having DD2 to make sure we were certain.

Ex and dh both had a vacectomy, neither had any side effects. Ex recently got a reversal after 10 years because his second wife wants a child.
