AZ speech therapy, my child is ready?

My two year old son will be 3 in January and it's only really been in the last month or two that he is starting to say words we can understand. My older son was ahead verbally and showed signs of being gifted so we never sought out services or enrolled him in preschool.

Our two year old understands everything we say so we have no worries there. What's the best route to get him evaluated? We are without insurance so taking him to the doctor for a referral is out.

I put in a request for early intervention but I was wondering if there were other organizations in AZ as well. I remember there being workshops and stuff in the Tempe area that I took my oldest and they gave him books and different learning activities at the end of classes. Can't seem to find anything like that now though.

Depending on where you are in AZ you usually go through your local school district's main office. That is what we had to do when we lived in Gilbert (Higley district). They didn't think our 3 year old qualified at the time, but less than 2 years later when she started school she was immediately tested and began speech services through her charter school.

We are in Gilbert so I'll give the district a call. I'd prefer to not having to wait until he is 5 though if there's a chance he could get help with speech earlier.

I believe most school districts (as well as the school I work at) have a special education preschool program. If your child qualifies for services, he may be able to attend their preschool program, or come to just receive speech services (depending on their policies). The school can provide free evaluations.

Yeah that. Sorry. I should have clarified. Our three year old clearly needed the services, but they said she would outgrow them and therefore didn't qualify for the preschool. But then 2 years later when she started school it was even worse and she was immediately placed into speech services (which she had an amazing specialist that improved her by leaps and bounds within 2 years). You just have to contact the school district office and ask them how to get your child tested.

Re: AZ speech therapy, my child is ready?

Thanks for your help! I have an update.. I had my child evaluated through the school district and he had no developmental delays, which I was a little afraid he might have but he did really well. Since he would not say a single word he made it difficult for them to evaluate his language and basically just had to go off of what I told them he can say. So he'll be starting next month before he even turns 3 and going 4 days a week for 2 1/2 hours. I'm sad but I know it will be good for him.
