Pink discharge from DD... What the..?

A couple months ago DD got a nasty bug where she was throwing up every 15-20 minutes and ended up in the hospital for 24 hours with an IV. At the same time she had this faint pink discharge. I'm not sure if she pee'd it out, or if it was vaginal discharge, but if you looked real close it looked like a pale pink powder. Really weird. The doctors had no clue. There was very little of it and it only happened in a couple of her diapes. DD had been in cloth diapers and I hadn't used anything in her diapers at all or switched detergents or anything.

She got better and the pink stuff never came back. Well today she's having it again. It's very faint on the cloth diaper, about the size of a nickel and powdery looking and I think it is coming out with her pee. She's acting fine today other than that she's slept a lot.

Any ideas what this is? I'm not worried about it, it's just odd.

is it pink or kinda orangy. I know if u have some orangy powder stuff in ur urine it's a sign of dehydration.

When my DD was first born, she had pinkish pee - the pedi said it was called urea crystals (something like that), and that it was normal for a newborn. I wouldn't say it was powdery, though. I'm searching for you now.

From mindspring.com

If you see a pink spot in the front of your newborn's diaper, don't become alarmed thinking it's blood in the urine. Uric acid crystals in the urine dry on the diaper to form a salmon pink powder. If you scrape it with your finger nail you can see that it is powdery. It is absolutely harmless and nothing to worry about; however, if you see it in every diaper it could mean that your newborn's urine is very concentrated which could happen if he isn't getting enough fluids.

You're lo's probably dehydrated.

Re: Pink discharge from DD... What the..?

we had this happen twice with my second son. However, it was because we had switched to disposables for 1 or 2 diapers and back into cloth, the chemicals from the sposies were actually what was the problem, mixed with the pee it looked exactly how you are describing it was a pinkish almost powdery substance on the cloth diapers. We had a urine test done on him to make sure it wasn't a uti etc etc, and the only thing the doc could think of because she knew we only did cloth... we had a slight problem while we were no where to get a dipe other than sposie when this occurred, but if you used even one sposie before it happened, it might be the chemicals were still on her when she peed.

Re: Pink discharge from DD... What the..?

Wow, I thought this thread kind of died... I didn't realize there were more replies.

Uric acid crystals make complete sense. When DD was in the hospital she had been throwing up everything and was getting dehydrated so she was on an IV. I wonder why the ped wouldn't have known what it was when he saw it?

And this time around DD wasn't nursing well. I suspect a sore throat. But she went several days without nursing much so I'm sure she was getting dehydrated. Thankfully the pink stuff is gone and she is nursing fine again.

Thank you so much This puts my mind at ease.
