Cough question

Ds1 had a cough (a real wet, barking cough that caused him to throw up)..and he ended up getting treated for walking pneumonia. He's doing tons better...now ds2 has a cough. A very different cough, but it's interrupting his sleep and it seems pretty bad. The cough isn't wet or barking though. It's just a real...I'm not sure how to explain it..but the cough itself doesn't seem painful or anything like ds1's cough was..it's just that it's keeping him up and he usually ends up spitting at a little bit at the end of a cough..like he's coughed a little bit of something up? I'm not sure.

Is there some way to treat a cough at home or should I take him to the ped?

If it's not a wet cough, I would just keep a close eye on it for now. To help him get sleep at night, get Delsym cough syrup, it's what I have used for a long time. Doesn't taste nasty and actually works.

If the cough is driving you nuts, take him in. Have you tried vicks and the like? DD1 is/was asthmatic. Sometimes she has those wierd dry cough while sleeping. If it wakes her up, I give her some albuterol or her inhaler. If it doesn't bother her too much, I just keep an eye on it.

Re: Cough question

See, i think it seems to be allergy related. Both of my boys get seasonal asthma when the weather starts turning colder...but I still have some albuterol. I think I'll try some claritin and try to go look for some delsym. If that doesn't work, I'll call the ped to ask about starting the albuterol again.

I'm sure it's not a serious cough, but I just hate for him to be coughing his head off every single time he lays down. It's not bugging me like annoying me or anything, but I'm sure it might be to him. And last night, he woke up around 1a or so and every time he laid down he just kept coughing so he was ready to get up for the day. Can't say I blame him, but I was wiped out!

Re: Cough question

I was going to say, it sounds like my allergy cough, this year the grass and trees have been very high on the pollen counts and it makes it very hard to breathe, you continue to cough and occasionally cough up gunk. Our Ped gave the kiddos all Zyrtec (as claritin didn't work on them) and then the OB gave me Zyrtec with sudafed in it because I was getting pink eye every other week from the draining in my eyes as I slept.

Good Luck!! oldest DS had a very bad allergy to something when we went to california to visit relatives in early spring and had several asthma attacks from it, and it was just a constant cough for an entire 2 weeks while we were there.

Poor kiddos & mama....that doesn't sound like any fun at all! If I don't see any improvement in the next couple of days, I'm going to get him to the ped for some better allergy meds.
