Starting food & nursing

I'm getting ready to start DD2 on food, and she's my first baby that I've nursed, so I'm wondering how I need to go about this so that I don't run out of milk, since I will obviously still be nursing her. I don't have a pump, I always just nurse her. Do I need to do anything to make sure that I don't run out of milk when she starts on food, or will my body just adjust naturally? This is probably a dumb question, but I really have no idea since this is my first time. She is 6 months old, if that matters. Thanks!!

I didn't have any problems with our first. I nursed her until she self weaned at 15 months. I work, so I pumped at work, but stopped pumping around 10 months. I just nursed when she asked. When first introducing solids I nursed first, and then ate. Good luck!

Your body should naturally adjust Our bodies are pretty neat like that!

I just started my baby boy on solids, but we're not starting out on much just letting him experiment with foods. He's not yet eaten enough to replace any milk.

Generally you nurse, then offer solids. Once a solids pattern is established you can cut down a nursing session, and yes, your body will adjust

Thanks, everyone! So far, so good...she's had a few nights where she's not at all interested in the food, and a few where she can't shove it in fast enough (most of it goes in her lap or squishes through her fingers though, lol), but she's made it clear that NOTHING is replacing her boobie right now! Hehe...thanks!

Re: Starting food & nursing

Oooh I'm looking for threads like this. My son is 4.5 months old and I'm starting to think about how introducing solids will go (the plan is to do so at 6 mo).
However, I let him lick and apple I was eating the other day. He loved it. Then today I let him lick a nectarine. He took one lick and tried to grab it!

Re: Starting food & nursing

I was planning on introducing at 6 months but she just turned 5 months the 7th and seems soooo interested. So I got a bunch of jars of basics for her to try and at lunchtime I offer her a couple of teaspoons after she nurses for about 10-15 minutes. Shes had green beans and apple sauce & loves it. I figure after a couple of weeks ill start doing breakfast too & then do breakfast lunch & dinner around 6 months.

Re: Starting food & nursing

From what I read, their primary nutrition until they are a year old should be from breastmilk or formula. 'Food before one is just for fun'. Your would feed her first almost a whole meal, then offer the solids. She may not eat much at first but as time goes on she will start to eat 2-4 tablespoons per meal once to twice a day. Your body will adjust to her needs since its such a slow transition.

Your body is all about supply and demand. I would still nurse before or after she eats so your body still knows.
