RFing 1 year old with a full leg cast?
My 1 year old DS rides RFing in a Radian. He's going to be having surgery on his femur in the near future. We don't know all the details of his surgery and recovery, yet, but it appears most likely that he will be in a full leg cast. Will this be a problem for him RFing?
If he doesn't get a full leg cast, then it might be a full body cast. How on Earth do we properly restrain him if that happens???

Re: RFing 1 year old with a full leg cast?
Ask your hospital if they have something called a "Hippo". They are seats designed for situations like this that allow kids to be RF while in a cast.
If he ends up in a full body cast, I'm not sure. But, ask your hospital, they may have had this situation before and have a solution. Good luck!

Re: RFing 1 year old with a full leg cast?
I am pretty sure that the Hippo by Britax mentioned by the pp accomodates full body too. You need to start working on this ASAP especially if you need insurance to cover or reimburse because it is $$$. I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I spent some time casted as a child and it certainly presents challenges.

The radian is a good seat for casted kids because of the very low sides. It might not work for EVERY casted kid, but it's worth a shot. Also, if the cast puts him over the rf'ing weight limit of the seat, he has to be ff'ing. I think the hippo is 35 lbs so if the radian works, that will be a better option in case he's real close to the weight limit.
Eta: oops, only 33 lbs for the hippo. How much does your son weigh now?

He's around 22 lbs now, so I think we'll be OK with the weight limits.

Then I would push them to get you a britax hippo...if that doesn't work out, a radian will hopefully do it.

My boss and I are CPST's (she's an instructor) at our hospital and do this kind of stuff all the time. PM me and we can help get you in touch with someone in your area, or we can help work with you hospital to get an appropriate restraint for your child.
