I feel it should be a big factor. SN kids require a HUGE amount of resources, often life long. There are families I've seen with 4-5 kids, ALL special needs. I don't really see the benefit of intentionally adding to the load on a family already stretched thin.
If there's a significant chance if having another SN child d/t genetic predispositions, etc., the risk is too great.

Re: Does having a special needs child

My DS's issues are't genetic that we know of (heart defect, tetralogy of fallot, had one open heart surgery and may need another, we don't know yet), there is no history of CHD on wither side of out families so his heart just seems to have been a fluke happening. We did discuss not having more kids, but ultimately we both want more and I'd really love to have another "normal" birth experience. We do plan to wait a bit and see what the next year will hold, if he needs another surgery soon we will wait to try so we can focus more on him and getting him through another open heart. If he doesn't need any intervention for a while we plan to start trying next August. I think when it comes to special needs kids it is about finding balance (which admittedly can be very difficult!) with what your plans are/should be.
