Question How much folic acid?

Right now I am taking flinstones with iron right now (its all I can stomach already!) and I didn't know if they had enough folic acid in them or how much I should be taking.

Thanks!

Re: How much folic acid?

Definitely at least 800mcg/day. There have been some recent studies showing that taking 1mg/day can help prevent m/c, too.

Re: How much folic acid?

My recommendation would be AT LEAST 1 milligram per day. I take 5 milligrams per day, but that is because I had a baby with a neural tube defect. But I would say a milligram a day is good. Also, try eating leafy greens as well!

Re: How much folic acid?

I think the normal dose is 400 mcg/day but I actually have to take an extra dose to equal 800 mcg/day because I have a genetic mutation which causes me to miscarry. So the folic acid helps my body do it's job. You can't have too much folic acid! It is water soluble so whatever excess your body does not need it will pee out!

Re: How much folic acid?

I second what the above poster said, YOU CAN'T HAVE TOO MUCH!! Ask me how I know, I've been taking 5milligrams everyday since two weeks after my dd died in 2004, and I'll probably take it everyday until I can't conceive anymore! I want to make sure that each baby has a chance of beating NTD, and frankly, all the folic acid works (Caitlyn is my living proof!). Goodluck with figuring it all out, mamma.
